Enough With The Crime Stories…

28. June 2007

I swear, if someone was visiting Jacksonville and they flipped on CBS47 they would think they were in Detroit.  We do have a higher than acceptable murder rate, but it’s not what should define the city. Right now on the CBS47 website they are featuring 8 local news headlines.  Six of them are either crime reports, [...]

“Zoo Crew” Returns to Local Radio

5. June 2007

Back in January we wrote a piece about WAPE-FM dumping local “morning zoo” personalities Steve Sutton, Amadeus, and Eden Kendall.  They were replaced by something called “The Morning Mess” which is nearly impossible to listen to. Anyway, it seems now that the former Big Ape Morning Zoo folks have found their way back on the radio, starting later [...]

4. June 2007

We’re proud today to introduce a new local discussion forum for the First Coast.  Our goal is to go beyond the primarily urban-focused boards like MetJax was, and be a community site for downtown, as well as all of the neighborhoods of Jacksonville, and even the surrounding counties!  Signing up only takes about 45 seconds and is really [...]

We are proud and excited today to annouce the launch of a new project – sort of a sister site for JaxDaily.  We call it JaxVideos.com, and our hope is for the site to serve as a collection point for a massive quantity of user-generated and professional quality local video.  Right now there’s only about 20 videos there to start [...]

Clear Channel Unloads TV Stations

24. April 2007

Troubled media giant Clear Channel Communications has struck a $1.5 billion deal to sell off all 56 of their television stations as well as 161 radio stations nationally.  A list of the exact radio stations that were sold has not been released, so it’s not clear if any in the Jacksonville market might be included.  Clear [...]

Jacksonville.com Turns 10 Today

20. April 2007

It’s been 10 years since Jacksonville.com first went online, back in the “early days” of the Internet.  To celebrate the big birthday, the Times-Union staff has put together a special online section that takes a look back at some of the past front page designs.  Personally, I liked the site better back around 2000 when there [...]

Reviewing Times-Union Endorsements…

27. March 2007

Out of curiosity I went back and reviewed the Times-Union’s endorsements for Jacksonville City Council during the recent municipal election.  Certainly endorsements are not predictions, so this is not an attempt to measure the paper’s “accuracy” or anything of the sort.  Rather just to see how much the endorsements might have mattered in overall scheme [...]

What is “Beware the 26″ all about?

25. March 2007

As most everyone knows by now, there’s some sort of oddball viral marketing campaign going on in Jacksonville.  The tagline is “Beware the 26″ and it includes television, radio, and billboard advertising.  And a really poorly designed website.  Except the website is intentionally bad.  And the advertising is intentionally “underground” and crazy looking.  If you examine the [...]

An Interview with WJCT’s Tom Patton

28. February 2007

Question: How did you first come to work at WJCT? Tom Patton: That’s kind of a long story.  I was working at Peach State Public Radio (now Georgia Public Radio) in Atlanta as News Director for their 14 station network.  There were rumblings of a major reorganization at PSPR, and I was being encouraged to keep [...]

Tavis Smiley comes to town - with a guest

21. February 2007

Tavis Smiley, a nationally syndicated radio host, came into Jacksonville on Friday to speak at the University of North Florida for Black History Month. Although he did have a somewhat political message, he was pretty funny and entertaining outside of that as well. He also addressed topics relevant to everyone, such as education and political involvement [...]
