United Way wants you

United Way of Northeast Florida is looking for adult mentors to work with children on the First Coast. The effort will be primarily focused in schools, and targets potential mentors from all walks of life.

“There is a mentor shortage right now,” said Janet Owens, of United Way. “We’re getting mentors as volunteers who can work with and be trusted adults for students in the public school system.”

As part of an effort to help Duval County Public Schools meet a goal of 20,000 mentors by the year 2020, the organization is partnering with members of the community and local businesses.

“We are leading a fairly structured campaign,” said Owens. “We have about 20 organizations and there about 60 more we’re reaching out to.”

United Way is holding a recruitment drive at Hemming Plaza on June 21 from 10:00 AM to noon, followed by a community rally that goes until 2:00 PM. Applications are also accepted at the website.

Changes coming to the Landing

Some businesses at the Jacksonville Landing will be shifting around soon. A post office is moving in to the old Sundrez, that store is moving elsewhere in the building and expanding to have a quasi-grocery aspect, the food court will soon be full when a new restaurant moves in there, and Fuddrucker’s is coming…eventually…really, it’s coming, or so they say.

Depending on what kind of selection Sundrez comes out with, it may provide some competition for the hypothesized grocery at the old Haydon Burns library, which is only three blocks away.

Plans are moving forward to convert one of the city’s most well-knownÂ public buildingsÂ into aÂ new mixed-use center that would include shopping, retail, and a downtown grocery store.Â Developers believe construction could begin on the old Main Library as early as February 2008.

Nicky G’s Pizza (Already) For Sale…

Joey Marchy reports over on UrbanJacksonville that popularÂ downtown pizzeria Nicky G’s Brick Over Pizza has now been put up for sale on Craigslist.Â The restaurant opened less than two months ago, but has already attracted a loyal fanbase.

It’s not clear if this was the plan all along, or if the owners have just found themselves in over their heads.

Art Walk is back!
