Former Republican Senator Bob Smith appears very likely to enter the Senate race to replace Mel Martinez. Smith served three terms in the U.S. Congress representing New Hampshire during the 80’s and then was elected to two terms in the U.S. Senate from 1990 to 2002, when he was defeated for re-election.
He was, for a short time, an announced candidate for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2000. After losing his 2002 Senate re-election campaign, Smith then moved to Sarasota and has been selling real estate and engaging in occassional political activism, writing, etc.
In 2004, Smith endorsed John Kerry for president, citing the growing federal deficit and Kerry’s plan to balance the federal budget. In December of 2007, Smith endorsed Congressman Duncan Hunter of California for the Republican presidential nomination.
