Councilwoman Glorious Johnson has officially announced that she’s switching from Republican to Democrat. This is a move she suggests was a long time coming.
“These past five years have been a living hell,” said Councilwoman Johnson on the local message board JaxOutLoud. “When you are not a part of the special corrupted group, you are targeted for the worst.”
This may come as quite a surprise to local Republicans, based on fairly recent comments from Johnson in a Folio Weekly article published last Spring. The colorful article included a controversial photo of Johnson wearing an “Equal Rights for Southern Whites” t-shirt and laughing.
“All of these forty-some years we’ve had black Democrats, and all I see is deterioration,” Johnson told Folio Weekly last April. “I see our people being sold out. And they said I was a sellout because I was a Republican? Who else is out there fighting?”
Councilwoman Johnson partially credits Barack Obama as inspiration for switching parties. That and her ailing mother is apparently a “yellow dog” Democrat.
More importantly, the move will position Johnson favorably for a mayoral bid in 2011.
