U.S. Representative Kendrick Meek (D-Miami) is expected to announce that he will enter the 2010 race for U.S. Senate tomorrow morning at a press conference in front of his home. He will be seeking the seat currently held by Mel Martinez, who recently announced his plans for retirement.
The Miami Democrat is a four-term congressman and would become be the first serious candidate to enter the race. Meek replaced his mother, Carrie, in Congress in 2003. He previously served eight years in the state House and Senate after winning his first election at the age of 27.
He currently sits on the House Ways & Means Committee.
Meek’s biggest claim to fame is probably that he lead John Kerry’s Florida campaign in 2004, though he’s also become well known for clashing with state Republicans and supporting the class-size amendment. Still, he would have to be considered a long-shot to win his party’s nomination if fellow Democrat and State CFO Alex Sink joins the race.
