Today the Florida Times-Union officially endorsed Jay Plotkin for State Attorney in the August 26th election to replace Harry Shorstein. The paper suggests that Angela Corey is too closely aligned with the Sheriff and that tight relationship might not be a good thing.
Corey has a close relationship with Duval County Sheriff John Rutherford and the police unions, which she has trumpeted.
Teamwork and strong prosecution are essential, but the “war on crime” approach has not been productive in addressing root causes of crime. There seems some danger that Corey falls in that camp.
Corey views the sheriff, for instance, as a partner in the criminal justice system. Corey insists she means that she would work well with police to provide the best service for the people. She says she is her own person and will not relinquish her independence for anyone.
Plotkin takes issue with Corey’s statement that police would be her No. 1 client. He says the people are the primary client. Yet, he says he has a different personality than Shorstein, is less confrontational, and has a good working relationship with the sheriff.
Plotkin pledges to increase partnership with the sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets initiative.
But ultimately, the paper cites Plotkin’s leadership experience as the key to his endorsement…
Plotkin says that the State Attorney’s Office is one of the largest law firms in the city and that he is a proven administrator. That is an issue in an era of tight budgets.
Corey says she will hire an experienced administrator, preferably with a military background, and that the state attorney is a leader and should not be running the daily details of the office.
That begs the question, however. The head of a law firm ought to have management expertise. Plotkin has handled both the administrative details of the office and the prosecution of high-profile cases.

September 7, 2008 will be the one year anniversary of the murder of my 23 year old daughter. She was murdered by one of the repeat offenders that the Harry/Jay administration allowed to walk in and out of prison. My daughter was a college student with a bright future. She went to visit a friend that she’d known for 3 weeks. The Headline read “That she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Well, we live in a gated community and she dared to step outside of the gate is that the wrong place?
The wrong place in my opinion is for criminals to be Free to terrorize the public, but Jay Plotkin and Harry Shorstein have never agreed with that philosophy. So they let Thugs in and out of jail like they are going to the mall.
Then it is the favors for the rich, like the Pastor Darrell Gilyard case. Of course Pastor Gilyard is being represented by one of Plotkin’s key financial supporters and closest friends Hank Coxe. Let’s just see where this case goes. My guess is it will go the same way that the Neptune Beach teenage girl rape case where Harry said and I quote, “The DNA evidence suggested some contact between the 15 year old child and the potential suspect but that contact could be consistent with vaginal contact, it could be consistent with oral contact, or it could be consistent with non sexual contact,” said Shorstein.
Shorstein said the parents who rented the house won’t face charges since they didn’t know alcohol was being consumed.
Hank Coxe is the attorney for the 17-year-old boy.
“Well I think it’s one, the right result,” Coxe told First Coast News. “My client took and passed a polygraph and agreed to be questioned for over three hours by police and investigators.”
I am sorry Jay and Harry it is time for both of you to GET OUT!
