Upcoming election in Atlantic Beach

The City of Atlantic Beach will have a municipal election on October 2 to replace current mayor Don Wolfson with former mayor John Meserve, who is running unopposed for a two-year term. Two at-large city commission seats will be up as well - Seat 2, sought by John Fletcher and Carolyn Woods, and Seat 3, which has three contenders - Jonathan Daugherty, Paul Parsons and Sylvia Simmons. All commission seats are currently at-large and have four-year terms.

Two measures also on the ballot will decide the way future elections are conducted. The Atlantic Beach City Council approved a measure in late August allowing an October 2 ballot referendum for voters to decide whether to extend the current two weeks allotted between primary and runoff elections in city commission races. If approved, voters would have until the first Tuesday in November to decide any runoff. On approval of that measure, elections would also not be certified until the first commission meeting of November. Another referendum on the ballot would have members of the commission elected from districts around Atlantic Beach, a proposal which has received heavy opposition from Meserve.

While Atlantic Beach is an independent municipality, it is included as part of Duval County, and so information about polling locations or specific voting issues should be directed to the Duval County Supervisor of Elections office.
