The metrics are explained in the article, but basically they come from Alexa and Compete and represent an estimate of U.S. only unique visitors to a website.
They count each visitor once per month, so that might explain the difference in the figures.
Here’s a chart with some local blogs included, you can tab through the data on the bottom to see length of stay, number of avg pageviews, etc.
